Henry Kissinger’s death in November, 2023 saw the departure of a figure who had left a massive imprint on American foreign policy, particular during the Cold War. The strategic decisions for which Kissinger advocated in the service of ‘world order’ would, however, later result in calls for his prosecution for war crimes — particularly after the appearance of journalist Christopher Hitchens’ The Trials of Henry Kissinger. What might Kissinger’s life, and the criticisms of him, have to say about the prospects for a just international order, both in the past and future?
