Research, Creatively: A Bricolage Approach to Making Meaning

Abstract

In our often highly specialized academic silos, it can sometimes be easy to lose sight of the big picture when researching, and this talk will explore how and why an interdisciplinary and creative approach to research can help us discover new questions and ignite unexpected avenues for our work.

About the speaker

Michael Kula is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and Emerson College, and he is currently Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Washington, Tacoma. He is the author of the historical novel The Good Doctor, and his short stories and essays have appeared in numerous literary journals across the United States. His essay “How to Repair a Bicycle,” was named a Notable Essay by Best American Sports Writing, and he is the past recipient of grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the US National Parks Service, and the US Fulbright Scholar program. He is Fulbright Writer-in-Residence at the Center for the Affirmation of Literature at AMU and is currently working on a book on Kazimierz Nowak, a pioneering Polish traveler, writer, and photographer.
