Postgraduate Studies in Teacher Training for English Language Teachers

Postgraduate Studies in Teacher Training for English Language Teachers

Postgraduate Studies in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (SPKNJA) at the Faculty of English, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, are studies thanks to which graduates obtain pedagogical and didactic qualifications for the profession of an English language teacher.

Studies

Postgraduate Studies in Teacher Training for English Language Teachers (SPKNJA) at the Faculty of English at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań cater for individuals who wish to obtain pedagogical and didactic competence to work as English language teachers in Polish primary and secondary schools and have achieved a proficiency level in English from B2 to C2.

Graduates of the SPKNJA postgraduate studies at the Faculty of English acquire qualifications to teach English in the appropriate types of schools specified in the Ministry of National Education regulation of September 14, 2023, and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education regulation of July 25, 2019. A person who holds a master’s degree, a postgraduate diploma, and an appropriate certificate confirming the level of proficiency in English at level C1 acquires the qualifications. The required level of English proficiency for full qualifications is C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The list of certificates is presented in the Regulation of the Minister of National Education of August 1, 2017, on the specific qualifications required of teachers (Journal of Laws of August 24, 2017, item 1575).

During the studies, students acquire knowledge and skills in psychology, pedagogy, and English language didactics. They also complete internships in Polish primary and secondary schools. Additionally, students learn about the latest trends in teaching different age groups and familiarize themselves with the culture of English-speaking countries.

Target audience

Based on the Regulations of the Minister of Education and Science of 14 September 2023 on the specific qualifications required of teachers, and the Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 25 July 2019 (as amended) on the standards of education preparing for the teaching profession, the following candidates may apply for the SPKNJA postgraduate studies:

  1. Graduates of long-cycle Master’s studies or first- and second-cycle studies in English philology, applied linguistics, or other so-called related fields, whose curriculum defines learning outcomes in terms of knowledge and skills that include the content specified in the core curriculum for general education in English.
  2. Holders of a Master’s degree who are graduates of either first- or second-cycle studies in English philology, applied linguistics, or other related fields (as described above), may be admitted on the condition that they present a certificate confirming advanced language proficiency before completing the SPKNJA postgraduate studies.
  3. Holders of a Master’s degree in fields other than those listed above may also be admitted, provided they present a certificate confirming advanced English language proficiency before completing the SPKNJA postgraduate studies.
  4. Native speakers or individuals who have lived for an extended period in English-speaking countries without a Master’s degree cannot be admitted unless they complete a Master’s degree during the course of the postgraduate studies. If they hold a Master’s degree in a field unrelated to English philology, they must present a certificate confirming advanced English proficiency before completing the SPKNJA postgraduate studies.

Important: In cases 2–4, it is not possible to complete the postgraduate studies and obtain a certificate without presenting a language certificate at a minimum C1 level. A list of acceptable certificates is given in the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Science of 14 September 2023 on the specific qualifications required of teachers [external link to content in Polish; date of access: 2025–06–20; see: Page 20 of the document].
